BME HE User Day Barcelona 17-18 May 2018

“Best user day ever” – was the comment from most attendees !!!

For some time now the user group has wanted to have a user day abroad.  A vote was taken at the May 2017 user day in Reading and the consensus was that Barcelona was going to be the venue for the 18th BME Qlik HE Conference in May 2018.  As the expense was not insignificant, some universities had to decline but the conference was still well attended.

For the first time we decided to have university presentations over two days.  The user day began at 2pm on 17 May and was held at the H10 Casanova Barcelona Hotel.  The presentation sessions on 17 May was followed by a guided 5 hour Food & Wine Walking Tour of Barcelona (arranged by Spanish Trails). Everyone raved about the tour as it was a excellent way to see ‘off the beaten track’ Tapas restaurants and explore Barcelona.   We stopped off at 5 different Tapas restaurants during the tour with our guide explaining each local dish and drink. This forum proved an excellent way to for Qlik users at universities to network with each other and discuss the varying ways the software was been used at each institution.

The user conference resumed at 10am on 18 May and ended at 4pm.  In addition to the UK university presentations, we were fortunate to be able to get two Spanish institutions, EAE Business School  and Instituto de Empresa to present the way that Qlik was used at their universities.  This was a good way to benchmark how UK university Qlik applications fared against usage of Qlik in another country.  Qlik and BME hosted dinner at a Barcelona waterfront restaurant after the event, followed by sundowners at a roof top bar.  Once again great opportunities to chat informally and network.

The standard of the presentations on both days was again excellent. With Mark Gittins and Stuart Powell from Anglia Ruskin being voted as delivering the ‘most beneficial’ presentation. The user day event is still a superb way of sharing ideas, expertise and tips between universities that have implemented and continue to develop Qlik. The nine presentation session delivered on the day are listed below. All of the presentations are available to download on the BME HE Forum.

A great event and thank you to all who attended and especially presented.
